Meal Replacement Bars UK: Which Type Is Best?

In this guide

Written by James Frost, founder of Flaming Phoenix. Updated October 2026.

The best meal replacement bar depends on the job. For weight loss, choose one sold as a meal replacement for weight control: under GB rules it gives 200 to 250 calories plus at least 30% of the reference vitamins and minerals, and SlimFast's 202-calorie bar is the easiest to find. For a full meal on an active day, you need 500 to 600 calories.

Disclosure: Flaming Phoenix makes Phoenix Bars, our high calorie protein bars. They appear here only in the full-meal section, because at up to 557 calories they are not a meal replacement for weight control and should not be used as one.

How I compared them: calories against the job the bar is for, protein as a share of those calories, vitamins and minerals, and price per bar. The yardsticks are the GB legal conditions for weight-control bars and Public Health England's rule of thumb of 400 calories at breakfast and 600 at lunch and dinner. Labels and prices were checked on Tesco's website or the brand's own shop in October 2026.

What counts as a meal replacement bar in the UK?

In the UK, only bars sold for weight control have a legal definition, and each must provide 200 to 250 calories per meal. The conditions come from Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/1413, kept in GB law after Brexit, and a bar has to meet all of them before it can claim that replacing meals helps you lose weight:

  • Calories: 200 to 250 per meal.
  • Fat: no more than 30% of the calories.
  • Protein: 25 to 50% of the calories.
  • Vitamins and minerals: at least 30% of the reference amounts, plus at least 172.5mg of sodium and 500mg of potassium per meal.
  • The claim: replacing one main meal a day of "an energy restricted diet" helps keep weight off after weight loss, and replacing two helps weight loss.

Everything else that calls itself a meal replacement, from protein bars to 600-calorie expedition bars, uses the phrase informally. Same words, opposite jobs.

You can check a label in a minute. A SlimFast Salted Caramel bar has 202 calories, 16g of protein and 6.2g of fat. Protein gives 4 calories a gram, so 16g is 64 calories, or 32% of the bar; fat gives 9, so 6.2g is 56 calories, or 28%. Both sit inside the rules. A Phoenix Bar, at up to 557 calories with up to 19g of protein, fails on calories and on protein share (about 14%), which is why I do not sell it for dieting.

What are the best meal replacement bars for weight loss?

The best meal replacement bars for weight loss are the ones that meet the GB weight-control rules, because only those are built and labelled to replace a meal on a calorie-controlled plan. Three UK options, checked October 2026:

  • SlimFast Meal Replacement Bar (60g): 201 to 202 calories, 16 to 17g protein and, according to the pack, 27 vitamins and minerals; £8 for four at Tesco, or £2 a bar. Labelled as a "meal replacement bar for weight control", and the easiest of the three to buy in a supermarket.
  • Shake That Weight Crispy Caramel Meal Bar (58g): 212 calories, 15g protein and 23 vitamins and minerals in its nutrition table; £2.50 a bar from the brand's shop, less in bulk. Sold as "1 bar = 1 meal replacement" within the brand's diet plans.
  • Nupo One Meal bars: about 200 calories per serving, according to the brand; £36.99 for 15, about £2.47 a bar. Every flavour was sold out on Nupo's UK shop when I checked.

Two points apply whichever brand you pick. These bars are designed to replace one or two meals within a calorie-controlled diet, not to be eaten on top of your meals or as your only food; SlimFast's own listing says its meals "are not designed to be your only food". And the NHS suggests aiming to lose 0.5 to 1kg a week rather than losing weight suddenly. If you take medication or are under medical care, speak to a GP before replacing meals regularly.

Are Huel bars a meal replacement?

Huel's Complete Nutrition Bar is sold as a "nutritionally complete bar", not as a meal replacement for weight control. The 55g Peanut Caramel bar at Tesco has 205 calories, 15g of protein and 26 vitamins and minerals for £2.50. That makes it a useful light lunch on a busy desk day, but matching a 600-calorie lunch would take three of them, at £7.50.

The same brands sell drinks that do the same job in liquid form, and the guide to high calorie drinks, smoothies and milkshakes covers the higher-calorie end. Japan's equivalent comes in blocks, and I have covered how to buy Calorie Mate in the UK. If your busy days are really night shifts, the night shift eating guide covers that schedule.

Which bars carry the calories of a full meal?

RealMeal at about 600 calories and Phoenix Bars at up to 557 are the only bars I found on UK sale with close to the 600 calories Public Health England suggests for lunch or dinner. Neither is a meal replacement for weight control; both are for days when getting enough in is the problem.

  • RealMeal (150g): 600 to 604 calories and about 30g protein, vegan and gluten-free; £4.99 each from the brand's shop.
  • Phoenix Bars (120g): 529 to 557 calories and up to 19g protein, vegan and gluten-free, with a shelf life of up to two years; £5.25 a bar. Crumbled into hot water or milk, one becomes a bowl of high-calorie porridge.
  • Greenbelly Meal2Go (155g, two bars): 650 to 695 calories, an American brand priced in dollars; the page on Greenbelly meals in the UK covers buying it here.

Do not buy any of these for a diet: one Phoenix Bar has more than twice the calories of a SlimFast bar. They suit hill days, long rides and expeditions. The wild camping food guide applies the idea to a night on the hill, the ultra endurance and expedition nutrition guide covers multi-day efforts, and there is more for hillwalkers and ultrarunners in their own guides. For fuel you eat during a race, start with energy gel alternatives. A long shelf life also makes a dense bar a sensible emergency cupboard food.

If eating enough is the hard part, a dense bar eaten slowly, or made into warm porridge, can be easier than facing a full plate. The soft, easy-to-eat foods guide has more ideas, and what to eat when your appetite is low is a gentler place to start. The calorie-dense foods guide explains why fat-rich foods pack the most into the least space, and the ranking of the highest calorie bars in the UK compares every bar I checked per bar and per gram.

Is a protein bar a meal replacement?

No: a protein bar is a snack built around one nutrient, and most carry around 200 calories. A Grenade Carb Killa has 21g of protein and 222 calories, a good snack between meals and a thin lunch. If a wrapper leads with grams of protein rather than the word meal, that is what you are holding. Protein matters if you are trying to gain weight or training hard, and a meal needs more calories than a protein bar carries.

Meal replacement bars for weight gain

For weight gain, regulated meal replacement bars are the wrong tool by design, because a 200 to 250 calorie cap exists to limit calories, not add them. A full-meal bar between meals, or as a quick high-calorie breakfast, does the opposite job; the guide to the best bars for weight gain ranks the options by calories and cost per 100 calories.

Frequently asked questions

Are meal replacement bars good for losing weight? They can help as part of a structured plan. A bar that meets the GB rules can claim that replacing two main meals a day, within an energy-restricted diet, contributes to weight loss. Eaten on top of normal meals they add calories instead. The NHS suggests aiming to lose 0.5 to 1kg a week.

Is a meal replacement bar enough for lunch? Not by the usual yardstick. Public Health England's rule of thumb is about 600 calories for lunch, and a weight-control bar gives 200 to 250 on purpose, which is how it creates a calorie gap. If you are not trying to lose weight, add fruit, yoghurt or a sandwich.

Can you eat meal replacement bars every day? Weight-control bars are designed for daily use within their instructions, usually replacing one or two main meals, with balanced meals and snacks around them. Full-meal bars such as RealMeal or Phoenix Bars are best treated as real food for demanding days or a reliable extra meal.

Are Nature Valley protein bars a good meal replacement? Not on their own. A 40g Nature Valley Protein Peanut & Chocolate bar has 196 calories and 10g of protein, and Tesco's listing shows no added vitamins or minerals, so it does not meet the GB rules. It works as a snack between meals rather than instead of one.

Are there protein bars that are also a vitamin source? Yes. Fulfil sells protein and vitamin bars: the 55g Chocolate Salted Caramel bar has 192 calories, 20g of protein and nine added vitamins, each at about 30% of the reference amount per bar. At 192 calories it is still a snack, not a meal.

SlimFast, Shake That Weight, Nupo, Huel, Fulfil, Nature Valley, Grenade, RealMeal, Greenbelly and Calorie Mate are trademarks of their respective owners and are named only to identify the products compared. Figures come from their published labels and prices, checked October 2026. Flaming Phoenix has no affiliation with any of them.
