Kalteen Bars: The Mean Girls Bar, Explained (With a Real Recipe)

Kalteen bars (Kälteen in the film) are fictional Swedish nutrition bars from Mean Girls (2004) and the 2024 musical film, which Cady gives Regina George as diet bars when they actually make you gain weight. No official Kälteen bar is on sale; the only real one was a limited chocolate bar sold by Dylan's Candy Bar in 2015.

What do Kalteen bars do in Mean Girls?

In Mean Girls, Kälteen bars make you gain weight, and Cady passes them off to Regina as a diet bar that will help her lose it. Cady describes them to Janis and Damian as "weird Swedish nutrition bars" that her mum gave to children in Africa to help them gain weight, and another student explains that Coach Carr makes the team eat them to move up a weight class: "They make you gain weight like crazy."

Regina cannot check, because the wrapper is in Swedish and reads "Gå upp i vikt!", roughly "gain weight". Cady also claims they contain an ingredient that is not yet legal in America. The bars came back in the 2024 musical film, released in the UK on 17 January 2024, where Cady again tricks Regina into eating them, and a new generation has been searching for them since, often as Calteen, Caltine or Kaltine bars.

Are Kalteen bars real?

Kalteen bars are not a real product you can buy: no official Kälteen bar was on sale anywhere I could find in October 2026. The nearest thing to a real one was a novelty bar. In 2015 the New York sweet shop Dylan's Candy Bar launched a Mean Girls collection, with a party on Mean Girls Day, 3 October, according to Time Out New York, and BuzzFeed's taste test that November lists a Kälteen Bar at $5.25. It was a limited run and has long gone.

What you can buy today is the joke, not the bar. Etsy sellers offer printable Kälteen wrappers, such as a "Mean Girls Mini Kalteen Chocolate Bar Wrapper Printable" listed at £5.65, for wrapping an ordinary chocolate bar for a party.

Was the Kalteen bar a chocolate bar?

The films do not say what is inside a Kälteen bar, but the one real version, the New York shop's, was a chocolate bar: both of BuzzFeed's tasters said it tasted like a Crunch bar. That may be why so many people search for a Kalteen chocolate bar, and party versions are usually a supermarket bar in a printed wrapper.

If you want the chocolate bar that comes closest to the film's idea, pick by calories. The biggest single-serve chocolate bar I found at Tesco was the Yorkie Duo, at 380 calories in 72g; the full list is in my ranking of the highest calorie bars you can buy, chocolate included.

How many calories would a Kalteen bar have?

The films never give a number, but a bar that makes you "gain weight like crazy" would need to sit at the top of what real bars carry: about 500 to 600 calories. That is what the biggest real bars hold today. RealMeal's 150g bar has about 600 calories, and a Phoenix Bar has up to 557 in only 120g. An ordinary 40g cereal bar, by comparison, is closer to 200, so Regina would have had to eat three of those to match one.

The physics is simple. Fat gives 9 calories a gram and carbohydrate and protein give 4, the factors set in UK food labelling law, so the more fat a bar holds, the more calories each gram carries: 90% dark chocolate reaches 5.9 calories a gram, against 3.7 for a Grenade protein bar.

What is the real-life equivalent of Kalteen bars?

The real-life equivalent of a Kalteen bar is a high-calorie bar: a compact bar made from ordinary food to carry 500 calories or more, labelled honestly. A modern version needs three things the film implies: lots of calories in one bar, a small size for those calories (4 or more calories per gram), and no secret ingredients. The real bars that come closest, checked October 2026:

• RealMeal (150g): 600 to 604 calories and about 30g protein, 4.0 calories per gram, vegan and gluten-free; £4.99 each from the brand's shop. The most calories in one bar.
• Phoenix Bars (120g): 529 to 557 calories and up to 19g protein, 4.4 to 4.6 per gram, vegan and gluten-free; £5.25. The smaller bar for its calories.
• Dymatize Super Mass Gainer Bar (90g): 304 calories and 28g protein, 3.4 per gram. The gym version, closest to what Coach Carr's team would be handed to move up a weight class.
• Greenbelly Meal2Go (155g, two bars): 650 to 695 calories, an American brand; the Greenbelly meals UK page covers buying it here.
• Calorie Mate: Japan's balanced-nutrition blocks, sold as a light meal, not for weight gain, and the real foreign nutrition bar most people have heard of.

If you want the smallest bar for its calories, or one you can break into pieces, Phoenix Bars fit. If you lift and care most about protein, the mass gainer bar is the one. One thing worth saying plainly. In the film, Regina gaining weight is the punchline, and the prank is the plot. In real life, giving someone food they did not choose is not a joke to copy. Needing more calories than your appetite allows is common and nothing to be embarrassed about, any change to your weight should happen on your own terms, and if eating feels hard, it is worth talking it through with someone you trust.

A Kalteen-style bar recipe you can make at home

The most fitting homemade version is Swedish anyway: chokladbollar, the no-bake oat and cocoa treat. My version presses the same idea into bars, keeps it plant-based and uses UK cupboard ingredients.

You will need:

• 150g porridge oats
• 100g smooth peanut butter (any nut butter works)
• 60ml coconut oil, softened (about 4 tablespoons)
• 80g golden syrup or maple syrup
• 25g cocoa powder
• 1 tsp instant coffee dissolved in a splash of hot water
• A pinch of sea salt
• 20g desiccated coconut for the top

Stir everything except the coconut into a thick dough, press firmly into a lined loaf tin, scatter the coconut over and chill for an hour. Slice into eight bars and keep them in the fridge for up to a week.

Each bar comes to about 270 calories. The working, from Tesco own-brand labels checked October 2026: oats 555 (370 per 100g), peanut butter 630 (630 per 100g), coconut oil 494 (824 per 100ml), golden syrup 268 (335 per 100g), cocoa 91 (362 per 100g) and coconut 127 (635 per 100g), which totals 2,165 calories, or 271 for each of eight bars. Two of them come to about the same as one Phoenix Bar. Kalteen bar questions, answered

Do Kalteen bars actually make you gain weight? Only in the film. No single food makes you gain weight; a steady surplus of calories over weeks does, which is why the plot needs Regina eating them constantly. A real 500-calorie bar eaten between meals adds a fifth to a quarter of the 2,000 to 2,500 calories a day Public Health England uses for adults, but only if everything else stays the same.

What do Kalteen bars taste like? The films do not say. The only real Kälteen Bar, Dylan's 2015 novelty version, was compared to a Crunch bar by both of BuzzFeed's tasters. Homemade chokladbollar-style versions like the recipe above taste of cocoa, oats and peanut butter.

Are Kalteen bars Swedish? Only in the story. The umlaut and the Swedish wrapper are part of the joke, because Regina cannot read it. The nearest real Swedish relative is chokladbollar, the oat and cocoa treat the recipe above is based on.

Do weight gain bars exist? Yes. High-calorie bars of 500 calories or more are a real category used by endurance athletes, expedition hikers and people with small appetites. The difference from the film is that real ones are chosen deliberately, clearly labelled and made from normal food.

When is Mean Girls Day? 3 October, the date fans call Mean Girls Day. Dylan's held its Mean Girls launch party on that date in 2015.
