I took Phoenix Bars with me on Mt Teide and during my Aconcagua expedition. On Mt Teide, I was feeling quite tired and my legs were heavy about 400 metres before the summit. I had around a quarter of a Phoenix Bar and it was game-changing for me. I felt charged again and was able to reach the summit. I found a small amount of the bar made a big difference. The bar tasted really nice and was easy to eat on the trail. On Aconcagua, I went up to 4,385 metres but made a huge mistake of sending my Phoenix Bars ahead to base camp, so I didn’t have access to them for several days. In future climbs, I’ll be keeping them with me in my day hiking pack.
Flaming Phoenix Bars featured as a star in my food supply for my recent South Pole expedition! Easy to eat, even at -45c. Apple and cinnamon was a particular standout.
I got the short term bundle because I wanted to try something new on the hills. What ended up a very wet and windy (-11C windchill) wander, I may have been wet but I wasn't hungry, or tired. Managed to go through 2 (or 3) bars on the hills including 1 before we set off, and 1 after we finished. I didn't find them dry, although I did drink 3.5l of water on the day. These definitely seem to do the job and are a good balance of size, calorie and flavour. Salted caramel was my favourite and I think it had actual salt flakes in.
During my eating disorder, these bars were one of the few food sources I found palatable, tasty and fulfilling and most importantly nutrient dense enough to get me through the day. I can’t recommend enough for people in similar situations who struggle to enjoy normal food whilst also wanting to feel healthy and strong.
I successfully used Phoenix Bars as part of my fuelling strategy for the Winter Spine Challenger South. Reliable, easily eaten and most crucially for me, tasty and palatable especially towards the end of the race where yo finds it hard to eat. I ate the bars slowly by breaking them down into chunks and consumed a couple every 30 minutes.
Crucially for this race where the temperature was around or below freezing, the bars remained soft enough to eat unlike some other food that I had that was too hard to eat!
I would definitely recommend Phoenix Bars as part of a fuelling strategy for any ultra and will be using them myself again in future on my next race.
