How many calories 10,000 steps burns, by body weight
At a normal walking pace of about 5 km/h, 10,000 steps covers roughly 7.5 km and takes about an hour and a half. A 55 kg walker burns around 315 calories over that distance, a 70 kg walker around 400, an 85 kg walker around 485, and a 100 kg walker around 570. Walking the same 10,000 steps briskly at 6 km/h lifts those figures by roughly 10%, because you cover slightly more ground per step and work harder doing it. Those numbers line up with the 300 to 500 range most sources quote, and they show why a single headline figure is always wrong for somebody: at the same step count, a heavier walker at a brisk pace burns nearly double what a lighter walker strolling does.
How this calculator works
The pace settings use metabolic equivalent (MET) values for walking from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, the reference dataset for the energy cost of exercise. Strolling under 3.2 km/h rates 2.3 METs, an easy 4 km/h rates 2.8, a normal 4.5 to 5.5 km/h rates 3.8, a brisk 5.6 to 6.3 km/h rates 4.8, a fast 6.4 to 7 km/h rates 5.5, and a very fast 7.2 to 7.9 km/h rates 7.0. Calories are then METs multiplied by your weight in kilograms multiplied by hours walked.
Step mode does something most step calculators skip. Rather than applying a flat calories-per-step figure, it converts your steps into distance using your stride length, works out how long that took at your chosen pace, and then applies the proper MET value. That matters because a step is not a fixed amount of work: a long brisk stride and a short shuffle cost very different amounts of energy, and a single per-step constant cannot see the difference.
Calories burned walking by time and distance
For a 70 kg walker, half an hour at a normal pace burns around 130 calories, rising to about 170 at a brisk pace and around 245 walking fast. A full hour comes to roughly 265, 335 and 490 respectively. By distance, a kilometre at a normal pace costs a 70 kg walker around 53 calories, so a mile comes to about 85 and a 10 km walk to about 530. Scale all of these with your own weight: an 85 kg walker adds roughly a fifth, a 60 kg walker takes roughly a seventh off.
Where 10,000 steps came from
Worth knowing, because it changes how much weight to put on the number: the 10,000 step target began as a marketing figure for a Japanese pedometer rather than a research finding. It is a perfectly good round target, and more movement is broadly better than less, but there is nothing physiologically magic about the number itself. Consistency across a week matters considerably more than hitting a particular figure on a particular day.
Why your number is an estimate
MET values are population averages measured on level, firm ground, and they report gross calories, meaning they include what you would have burned resting over the same time. Your stride, fitness, the surface underfoot and the weather all move the real figure. If your watch disagrees with this calculator, that is normal: wearables use heart rate and motion data and their own algorithms, so treat both as estimates rather than measurements.
Walking long distances
Everyday walking rarely needs planned fuelling. Long-distance walking is a different problem entirely. A full day on the long-distance walking trails or a big challenge day can cost several thousand calories, appetite tends to fall away exactly when the demand is highest, and everything you eat has to be carried. Walking wins on how long people can sustain it and how gently it treats the joints, so total weekly energy can end up closer than the per-minute figures suggest.
Why does my fitness tracker show a different number? Trackers estimate from heart rate, motion and their own models, while this calculator uses published MET values for your pace. Both are estimates and a difference of 10 to 20% between methods is completely normal.
