Climbing Calorie Calculator: How Many Calories Does Climbing Burn?
A two-hour bouldering session burns roughly 450 to 500 kcal for a 72 kg climber. Not the 800-plus most calculators claim, and the difference is the resting.
Climbing is intense but intermittent. In a normal gym or crag session you're actually on the wall for perhaps a quarter to a third of the time; the rest is belaying, brushing holds, shaking out and staring at the problem. Standard calculators apply the on-the-wall burn rate to your whole session, which overstates it badly. This calculator models a real session instead: you set how much of your time was spent climbing, and it blends the climbing burn with the resting burn for an honest figure. For alpine and mountain days, slide the climbing share up toward 80 or 90 percent, because on a long route you're moving nearly all day, and the numbers get big quickly.
Phoenix Bars: Up to 557 Calories Per Bar
Highly compact, low-volume, calorie-dense bars. Soft, easy to eat whole or as a warm porridge. Vegan, gluten-free and contain up to 66g of carbohydrates, 19g of protein & 8 vitamins & minerals.
Why climbers under-eat
The session number looks modest, but climbers routinely under-fuel anyway, partly because the sport rewards being light and partly because nobody wants to climb on a full stomach. The result is trashed sessions and slow recovery. A dense, compact option solves both problems: high-calorie bars like Phoenix Bars carry up to 557 kcal in a 120g bar that fits a chalk bag pocket, engineered to be easy to eat in small bites between goes rather than as one heavy sitting.
For big mountains, where daily needs can double, our high altitude mountaineering nutrition guide covers the full picture.
FAQs
How many calories does bouldering burn per hour?
Blended across attempts and rest, a typical hour of bouldering costs a 72 kg climber roughly 220 to 260 kcal. During the actual climbing, the rate is more than double that.
Does climbing burn more calories than hiking?
On the wall, yes. Across a whole session, a steady hike usually burns more because it's continuous. Check both with our hiking calorie calculator.
How many calories does an alpine climbing day burn?
With 8 to 10 hours mostly moving, an alpine day commonly costs 3,500 to 5,000 kcal, which is why mountain appetite planning matters more than session snacks.
