I just find Phoenix Bars very easy to store ( based on calorie return ) and I enjoy the eating experience taste and texture.
I tend to re order with the specific intent of use on ultra distance races( I do approx 3-4 a year ) or training days of 4hrs upward. My recent order is for the ARC25 along the South West Coast Path in Cornwall on the 25th Jan.
With this race UTMB also insist as part of the mandatory kit that an emergency amount of calories is carried throughout the race ( not with the intention for normal use ) Phoenix Bars are perfect in calorie quantity and size plus easy to store in bottom of pack for this purpose.
These Phoenix Bars are packed with calories for taking on hiking trips or long runs. To up my calorie intake I really like eating the salted caramel bars, but I’ve also crumbled the chocolate Phoenix bars into porridge in the morning. Delicious!
Have been trialling the new flavours during my Arc of Attrition training & in view of some longer events in summer. Love the fact that 1 single bar meets the emergency calorie requirement of the essential kit list for my distance (c500kcal). Ginger is my favourite (not keen on Cherry Bakewell but that’s personal preference). The bars are high in calories but not overly sweet or gooey. More crumbly in texture (you definitely need fluids with them). They have a little hint of salt crunch which I really like & love that they provide a break from the sickly gels (which have their place) but these come into their own when more substantial nutrition is needed. Would highly recommend for longer runs (>30k) and in the latter stages when you are more likely to need ‘real food’ to supplement other nutrition (I tend to intersperse with carb based drinks & gels or use as a drop bag ‘meal’ that is easily accessible and portable). Ginger flavour has the added benefit of helping with nausea, if that is an affliction in the later stages of long events. I also enjoy the bars post run with a cup of tea, when you can’t quite face/access a meal but know you need some immediate calorie replacement & recovery fuel until that is possible. Have not tried as a porridge as yet … but in multi-day events these would be great due to compact size.
Good flavours, easy to eat, even as porridge. No gastro issues.
I've spent some of time using Phoenix Bars during my training for the Winter Spine Race and I like them. It’s like Lembas bread from lord of the rings, tastes good and the new version less dry than the original. I’m taking them with me for the race. I also like that Flaming Phoenix takes the time to seek feedback, always a great sign of a company.
